I woke up at 7 am and looked out my window to see the snow melting on the ground. Spring is finally coming, and it was going to be a beautiful day! I began daydreaming, "Only if I could be a horse rider like Jennifer, my cousin, I could be at the stables riding horses". Just then the phone rang. Ring Ring Ring.

Author of this paragraph: Jodi

I picked up the phone and what a coincidence, it was Jennifer! "Lindsay, would you like to go to the stables with me today?" she said. With no hesitation, I eagerly accepted, jumping with joy - I almost dropped the phone. She said she'd be over shortly to pick me up. I rushed around the house to get dressed and eat as fast as I could. Ten minutes later, I heard Jennifer's car horn from out in my driveway. I jumped to my feet and flew out the door, leaving the door wide open behind me...

Author of this paragraph: jim-bob

Jennifer, 5 years my senior, has been a dedicated, enthusiastic, rider ever since I can remember. My parents used to say that I was to young and inexperienced to go riding with her. But ever since Jennifer became Parelli and John Lyons certified and I turned 12, my parents haven't been singing thier unapproving song anymore.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

As we pulled up to the barn I saw a young girl riding a horse. She tried to take her horse over the jump but instead he ran right through. The girl flew right over the horses head. As the horse landed, he fell to the ground.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

"Oh MY!", I said, as I clutched Jennifer's arm. "Will that happen to me too???". Jennifer calmly replied, "That girl just got her horse, and she is attempting to teach him to jump. What she doesn't know is that she can't force him over the jump, that is why he isn't cooperating". Don't worry, I'll teach you to be a good rider, Linday".

Author of this paragraph: kc

As Jen was tacking-up maverick, I thought, "Did she really mean I'd be a good rider in no time? Or was she saying that to make me feel better?" Well, I'd see when she gives me the lesson.

Author of this paragraph: Mel

I mounted Mav nervously, and clucked him to walk on, but he just stood there, I nudged him on with my heels and he still stood. I looked at Jennifer for help, but she said calmly, you can do it. I thought it through and knew I could do it...

Author of this paragraph: Snicko

Because Maverick wasn't listening to my gentle aids I decided to be more aggressive by giving him a boot in the ribs. He got the message to walk pretty quick. Wow I couldn't believe I had actually taught Mav something. Jenifer made me repeat the exercise a few times and he got easier and easier to move off my leg. My next lesson was

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

As my lessons progressed over the next couple days, I soon realized that it wasn't Maverick who was ignoring my requests, but that it was me not being clear enough in my cues! Maverick is an extremely well trained horse. Once I got the hang of it, I was able to communicate more clearly with him, and today I got to canter for the first time!

Author of this paragraph: Jodi

After my 5th lesson, as I was un-tacking Maverick, I saw the girl who had gotten bucked off a week ago. She was storming through the aisle with her horse, yelling at him and jerking on his lead rope. I asked Jen, "Why is she so mean to her horse?". Jen explained to me that some people who do not understand the nature of horses become frustrated when their horse doesn't listen, and they resort to more violent actions such as yelling and physical contact.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

Jen said, "Just remember that any time you become frustrated, you should never take it out on the horse. The horse will always try his hardest for you as long as you are clear in your signals to him". I thought about that for a minute, then said "Why don't you just teach her?". Jen said, "Some people just aren't open to new ideas. That girl, Amanda, just thinks she is too good for lessons. So, I cannot help her unless she first decides she needs help".

Author of this paragraph: jim-bob

Just then, Amanda walked past us and turned and said "What are you looking at??? Jennifer and I exchanged glances and giggled. Then amanda said "Why don't the two of you just grow up!!!" and what I was thinking when she said that is she's the one who needs to grow up and get a life, but I stayed quiet, not wanting to start a fight.

Author of this paragraph: jim-bob

And with that, amanda turned with her nose in the air and stomped off like she was queen of the land. What a stuck-up brat, i thought.

Author of this paragraph: Riane

I thought to myself wow i could never be so mean to my horse. I continued to untack Mav and then give him a quick brush. The next day I arrived at the ranch and was getting Maverick some grain and Amanda was doing it again. Her horse bucked her off and jumped the fence of the arena. I dropped the grain and ran to catch her horse which was galloping wildly and she wasnt even attempting to catch it.

Author of this paragraph: Ela Jefcoat

Amanda's gray galloped down a well-worn trail, and I took off to catch him. When I did, his eyes were showing the white, which Jen had told me was fear. I could not believe how much he was shaking. I was suddenly shocked when I got back to the ring Amanda was still down and surounded by people. Her father saw the horse and yanked the reins from me in order to "teach him a lesson." Luckily, the ambulance came, and once again, I was handed the gray.

Author of this paragraph: Mel

I petted him gingerly and talked quietly to him, "Oh grey horse, if only you were mine, I would treat you as you should be treated, never again would you be afraid". As I said all this to him, i desperately wished that I could have him, so he would never be hurt again, but I knew that would never happen...

Author of this paragraph: Christina

......or could it? I pondered that same question over and over in my mind. For the rest of that day and evening, the grey horse, who I had found out was named Glory, was all I could think about. I sat on my bed looking out the window, re-visiting that fearful expression on his face. I could almost feel him trembling, his heart beat, echoeing in my ears like a drum. Days passed and my mind resumed thought of Glory. Somthing drove me to make him mine, I had to find a way.

Author of this paragraph: LInda

I phoned Jen and told her my thoughts, she told me she had overheard Amanda's father saying that "that stupid horse would have to go!" My heart leapt! Glory wasn't stupid, just confused and scared. Jen said I should come to the stables tomorrow as the father would be there to take Glory to the sales, he may listen if I were to make an offer. My next problem was to get some money together.

Author of this paragraph: holly

I told my mom the story of the grey and how it had such a horrible owner. My mom wasn't that sure she kept saying, "you've only been riding for a few weeks, plus your father is not getting much money in at the moment." I felt like i was going to be sick! I ran out the front door and to the stables faster then you could say I WANT THAT HORSE.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

I knew Jen would understand. The next day while I was at the stables, Jen showed up. "Jen, what am I going to do? Mom says we don't have the money to own a horse!", I exclaimed. Then Jen told me that the owner of the Stables, Robert, was looking for a stable worker to clean stalls and feed the horses. "That's it! That's my answer!" Maybe this could all work out after all.

Author of this paragraph: Gobby

I brought the subject up with my mom and she finally relented. "Jenny?" I asked as I called. "My mom said I can work at the stables." I talked to her for a while then hung up. The next day I immediatly went to see Robert. Luckily he was in and I chirped, "I would like to work here." we worked out the details and I was soon on my way to owning the grey..or so I thought...

Author of this paragraph: Natalie

A couple days later, after getting used to my job, I had relized that I made at least $100 dollars. I was extatic about my profit, that I talked to my mom about. After our conversation, I just had to call Jen! "Jen? You'll never guess what?!" I exlaimed "What's that, Lindsay?" She asked curiously on the other line. "Mom said I can lease the horse, as long as I pay for half of the board!!! Isn't that wonderful?!" "Perfect! I'm coming to pick you up, now, so we can tell Robert!"

Author of this paragraph: Mel

I hopped into Jens car and we drove to the stables. Upon arrival I saw Robert riding the grey horse, and my mouth dropped, "Oh no I thought, I'm too late, Robert has brought Glory", Robert upon seeing us rode over. "What do you think of your new horse Lindsay?", my mouth dropped, "mine?" "Well he is mine at the moment, Jen rung me and told me how much you wanted him, by working here for me you can pay him off, then he will be yours". I couldn't believe it was true...

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

I walked closer and put my hand on the grey's face and stroked his soft hair genltly. He nickered and shook his head and I giggled in response. I fought hard to hold back my tears of joy with no luck. The tears rolled down, and I thanked Robert with all my heart "And you will never regret it!" I told him, "I will always treat this horse with love and respect". "The next thing you need to do now, Lindsay, is give this horse a name!" Robert said.

Author of this paragraph: katie

"Yes" Jen said, "Take your time and think of a real good name for this wonderful new friend you've saved." Linsday replied "I don't need any time to think about it! I've already made up my mind that his name will be Glory!"

Author of this paragraph: robin

The next day the two cousins went back to the stable. This time, instead of riding Maverick, she rode the most flighty horse there -- Magicians Magic Moment. He was a beautiful Arab gelding. Lindsay was very excited, and Jenn was a little worried. She ended up worrying for nothing, though, because Magic and Lindsay went perfectly together, they did transitions, canter, and even a few crossrails.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

The next day, she felt she was ready to ride Glory for the first time. Glory was very good for her until she tried to take him over a small crossrail. He slid to a halt, and Lindsay almost fell off. She collected herself and tried once more...same result. "Oh no, Jen, has Amanda ruined him for good?" Linday cried out.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

Jen explained to me that Amanda had not ruined Glory for good, and that it will only take some patience to get him over his fears. She had me begin by walking and trotting him over ground poles, learning how to adjust his stride between them. At first, he was hesitant of going over the ground poles, but with patience and consistency he was soon enjoying it very much. We ended the lesson at that and I gave Glory an extra special grooming session afterwards and lots of carrots.

While Lindsay was standing in Glory's stall brushing him and feeding him carrots, Amanda walked past and whispered under her breath, "That horse should be in a glue factory." Lindsay's mouth dropped down to the floor in hateful anger. She couldn't believe what she just heard. "What did you say about my horse?" Lindsay exclaimed angrily. But, Amanda just kept on walking, acting like she hadn't said a thing. She turned the corner and was out of sight. Lindsay was furious.

Author of this paragraph: Mel

Jen cam rushing to the stable, "Did you hear Lindsay, Amanda has a new horse, it's arriving now". I quickly untied Glory, and rushed outside with Lindsay to see the new arrival. A horse truck was just pulling up. "I hear this horse cost her parents a bundle", Lindsay whispered. "He's a champion in the showjumping circuit". Robert was by this time leading a deep blood bay warmblood mare off the truck, she was absolutely gorgeous. Amanda strove over to the mare with a superior look on her face.

Author of this paragraph: claire

Man was she beautiful. She was prettier than Glory, and probably better, too. "Well, Lindsay thought," she just has all the training that Amanda could want" And she began to feel jealous, even though she had her own horse to ride now, why couldnt he be so pretty and good? now began the new quest- to beat out Amanda in the Regional hunter jumpers junior division - 2 months away!

Author of this paragraph: Mel

Over the next few days with Roberts Guidence, Glory realised that it didnt hurt when jumping, and he began to love jumping once more. My main thought the was how I desperately wanted to beat Amanda, and show her that the horse she couldnt control, was better than her mare, and much better than Amanda had ever dreamed. I had secretly watched Amanda have a few lessons, and her mare Tequila Sunset was so graceful and magnificent. This just drove me harder to succeed, Amanda would be hard to beat

Author of this paragraph: Erin

I entered a show I knew Amanda was in and got put in the same classes as her. I trained Glory as much as I could for the show. It would start in two weeks. I rode Glory every day, teaching him something new every day and reviewing things we had done already. Glory and I were making such good progress within the first week, I gave him a day off. Glory learned everything he neded to know 3 days before the show! I knew for sure that we would win the show!

Author of this paragraph: Maya

The next morning, Lindsay got up early to check on Glory. Glory was beautiful. He had a smooth coat, with his powerful muscles rippling beneath it.

Author of this paragraph: Stephanie

I grabbed his halter and led him out. Before putting him in the trailer I made sure everything was ready and slipped on a thin blanket to keep him clean. As we approched the trailer he stopped and backed up. I called Jen for help.

Author of this paragraph: Mel

Jen spoke "You can do it", i talked to Glory quietly and he walked on after a moments hesitation. We arrived at the show with about 25 mins to spare before my event, I tacked Glory up and warmed him up before our event. I felt nervous as I entered the ring, Amanda looked a picture, her horse doing everything she was told. Glory excited by the crowds, jumped and figited around refusing to walk, prefering to trot.

Author of this paragraph: Mel

when asked to trot, Glory lept into a canter, the crowd terrifying him. Amanda was called in first, then 4 other girls. the rest of us sadly left the ring, and I watched Amanda perform a perfect routine for the judges. I patted Glory telling him not to worry as Amanda was given first place, a sash and trophy. I had to get Glory used to crowds before my next competition at the Regional hunters jumpers junior division, now 3 weeks away, another chance to proove Glorys worth and beat Amanda.

Author of this paragraph: claire

once more i worked so hard with him, often getting frustrated. but i just had to beat amanda, i had to!!! so if i got frustrated, i told myself that i couldnt do that if i wanted to place in the show. so after about a week of hard exercising, we were getting back in the groove. but that hard training took up alot of time. now the show was a week away and both glory and i were terribly nervous.

Author of this paragraph: jim-bob

The day before the show Glory and I were riding in the arena and Amanda came in with her horse. She hardly warmed up for 5 minutes! Then she demanded that I get out of the way while she jumped a course. So I did as she requested so that I wouldn't cause trouble, and Glory and I walked over to an empty spot in the arena and watched. When she was done, she walked past us and said "You actually think you have any kind of chance on that clumsy donkey you're riding? You're only setting yourself up for a big dissapointment!" and with that, she laughed and walked away. How mean, i thought!

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

while she walked away, she yelled back to lindsay, "I am the Champion in this State, so don't even think about it! There's no way a beginner like you can do better than me! Hee Hee HA HA" and she laughed wickedly while she walked back to the barn on her horse.

Author of this paragraph: Linda

My need to beat Amanda had taken a toll on my life at home and I was starting to get into a bit of trouble for not 'pulling my weight' around the house. Mom, dad and my brothers were all giving me a hard time, so I filled them in on the whole story. They began to get behind my cause 98% (I still had to do some chores) but now I knew they were there to help Glory and I to beat Amanda. My two brothers even started quizzing me at home on the Regional Hunters (Juniors) rules!

Author of this paragraph: Lauren

It was finally the day of the Regionals! I got up really early and threw on my show clothes. Just as I said good-bye to my mother Jen pulled up and said "Hurry Lindsay! The compition starts in 2 hours!" So I jumped in and we left for the barn. This time loading Glory was a breeze, he just walked in calmly and let me hook him to the trailer ties with no fuss.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

When we got to the show the first thing I saw was Amanda and her mare. Amanda was all decked up in top quality show cloths and had the best of tack. She was in the warm up ring. She had put up a 6'4" double bar and was trotting her mare at it. As I expected the mare stoped because of lace of speed. Amanda jumped of and started yelling and yanking on her mares mouth. I couldn't belive how crule she could be to these butiful animals! I tacked up Glory and mounted in the warm up ring.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

I was just trotting alond when Amanda flew cantering so fast she was almost a blur. She was kicking the mare with sharp spurs and yelling...."you stupid horse!!! I HATE you!" Whoa Glory I said calmly and he got jittery as Amanda raced by. I cantered him over som cross rails, then a few single virticles, then a gate, then a double bar. Glory was amazing! He seemed to know it was show time and he was smooth and calm. The croud didn't even seem to bother him.

Author of this paragraph: jim-bob

Then the class was called, and I was up first. I entered the ring and started with a canter circle, then on to the line which was an vertical then a oxer 4 strides apart. And, just as we had practiced, Glory flew over them with grace. Then, we came cantering around the corner to a large vertical with tons of flowers all over it. I felt Glory tense up a bit and I reassured him with my voice. He became a bit hesitant, but with my reassurance he went right over it beautifully...

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

"good boy" i whispered as we cantered across the diagonal to the 4th jump. It was a brick wall about 4'6" Glory had never jumped one before. I got really nervous and Glory knew it My hands began to sweat and my legs felt like jello. Just as I thought I would faint, I grabbed Glory's mane and closed my eyes fearing a crash. Glory saved me and adjusted his own stride and took the jump like a pro. I looked up and realized what happen and smiled with pride. Ok now get yourself together I thought to myself you aren't finished just yet. So I calmly sat up and asked Glory for a lead change to go around the corner.

Author of this paragraph: Mel

I had one last jump to jump, the big triple bar, it loomed up on me as i headed Glory towards it. 2 strides away from the jump a fight broke out between 2 kids on the sideline and Glory distracted, only jumped halfheartedly bringing the rails down, there was a groad from the crowd as i crossed the finish line. I had 4 faults, but was still in with a chance there had been no clears and 3 others on 4 faults, with only 2 more to jump, one being amanda

Author of this paragraph: leaping horse

But Amanda did not do very good in fact she had 8 faults. I had won i could not believe it i had just won first place. I was more stunned as I went up to receve the medal my hands started to get all soggy and my palms were sweaty it was horable.

Author of this paragraph: stw

I was so happy. i was so proud of Glory that i took the rest of the week off and just did trail rides for glory.i thought to myself, i have the best horse in the world!!

Author of this paragraph: JESS

After a long rest, I went back to the stables. Jen, Glory, and Robert were there. Glory, looking more beautiful than ever, calmly waited for me. Then I put the halter and sadle on her and started off with trots.Amanda all of a sudden, on her horse, said to me,"You won by cheating! That thing isn't at all good." I angerly said to myself,"CHEATING!" Jenny said that she has never lost, so she is taking it out on you.

Author of this paragraph: anonymous

I rode for a while longer in the arena, and then went on a trail ride. When I got back to the stable it was nearly dark. I untacked Glory and put the tack away, grabbing a grooming kit on the way back to her. I gave her an extra long grooming, and after putting her back in her stall, went to put the grooming kit back in the tack room and head home. When I got there I was suprised to find...

Author of this paragraph: stw

"What the hell???" I ran up to the house and rung first the vet and explained then Amandas house. Amanda sounded excited at the prospect of a foal, and instantly i was jealous, Here was Amanda with a mare now a champion foal and Glory was a gelding he couldn't have foals. "look what you have done you nasty girl" i screamed at Amanda "she was a dumb animal anyway" amanda replied. "Amanda you are an inconsiterate little brat" Robert said "i expect you never to return to the stables ever again, find somewhere else to be cruel to horse"

Author of this paragraph: stacey

Amanda turned and faced her father "say something to them daddy" she said "i'll say something alright" said Mr Samson "get in the car little girl, you will work at home to repay as for sunset, and you will never own your own horse again" he pionted toward the landcruiser, Amanda walked of in a humf "you will all pay for this" she screamed

Author of this paragraph: Mel

I couldn't bear the anger,I spoke up in Amanda's defence "Hang on, Sunsets been here 2 months, none of us knew she was pregnant. We all should have picked it up, Sunset was passed by the vet to compete in the show, how can all this be Amandas fault." With that we heard Sunset nicker and all saw in the straw a beautiful foal. "My god Sunsets alive still!!" We cheered Sunset while she licked her foal over, nickering. "Its a colt" Robert replied. "What are you going to call him Amanda?" I asked her

Author of this paragraph: Sharon

"I will call him Rudy," Amanda replied.

Author of this paragraph: Mel

Robert turned to Amanda and apolygised."I'm really sorry I wasn't thinking straight, I should have picked up she was pregnant, I can't expect you to if I cant". The vet agreed while asking Amanda who vet checked the mare on the day of the show. Amanda replied "It was a Dr Carter". The vet mumbled under his breath while Amanda gingerly walked over to her mare and Colt and patted them happily. The mare, while still extremely weak and lucky to be alive was gently licking her Colt Rudy still".

Author of this paragraph: Billy Bob

Then, in the heat of this emotional moment, Amanda turned to me and apologized for being so mean to her and asked her if I'd like to help train the new foal, Rudy. Extremely surprised, and also flattered, I agreed to help. Amanda smiled sweetly and gave her new foal a hug and pet Sunset on the neck softly. "Unbelievable"...I thought! "Amanda is acting like a totally different person" I told Jen later that day. "I just don't get it".

Author of this paragraph: krystle

Amanda didnt answer back. Lindsay thought she must of not heard so she went about cleaning out her stall.15 min later she said "Hey you up for a ride today?" Amanada gave a dirty look then said to lindsay "Im not your friend and never was your friend, ugh" Lindsay stood confused. What was wrong with amanda?

Author of this paragraph: Kaiyoum

A few moments later Amanda walked over with a cell phone. Smiling, she began to dial, and then a few moments later she started having a hushed conversation that Lindsay could not hear. "I wonder what's up with that?" Thought Lindsay, but she was starting to get worried. Amanda pulled out her tack trunk and started hastily throwing in bridles and halters. A few minutes later she walked over to Lindsay and gave her a shove. It hurt! Startled, Lindsay's temper finally broke loose!

He would be able to be tracked eventualy, and Lindsey would have a possibility to get him back, albeit a slim one. No, selling him would not be enough. Not in the least. She would have to take greater measures. The truck slowly turned around, changing the direction of Glory's fate.

Glory was in her dream. She was riding him, trying to get away from some nondescript thing that was after them, a dark threat that was always just out of sight. After breakfast, Lindsay got on her bike and began to ride over to the stable.

She didn't really think that she would have to practice very hard with Lindsay and Glory out of the way, but Sunset needed exercise anyway.      Shaking, I peered through a crack into Glory's box. Amanda entered holding an injection. "We will see who is who tomorrow at the show . When the judges blood test Glory, he will show up positive to steroids, she will be banned for life. When Rudy is weaned, Sunset will win all the shows. Lindsay will be so embarrassed she will sell Glory and I will buy my horse back, then Sunset will be reunited with her Lover, and Rudy will have his dad." Amanda advanced toward Glory bearing the injection.

Lindsay flung the door open and ran in as Jen watched, mouth gaping. "Stop" she shouted. Amanda whirled around and bumped into Lindsay, accidently lodging the injection into her skin. Lindsay jumped and bumped against the wall, depressing the plunger and unmeaningly administering herself the entire injection.

Driving home from the hospital, Lindsay thought about the events of the day... The police, humane society & AHSA had banned Amanda from showing or owning for at least ten years. Robert had purchased Tequila Sunset & her son Glory's Dawner, aka Rudy. Sunset was tramuatized, but almost sane, & would be retired. The people & horses would survive & thrive, most of all the legendary Lindsey Jones & Glory Halleliuah!
